I’m Sue, your South Bay Bark Busters Behavioral Therapist and Trainer. Not many people can say they owe their career choice to their dog. But I can. When my young Welsh Terrier, Kieran, began bullying my 13-year-old Cattle Dog mix, Tessa, I had no idea what to do. So I hired an in-home trainer.
Enter Bark Busters. My Bark Busters Behavioral Therapist explained that Kieran’s actions showed a major lack of respect for me. He viewed himself as leader of our pack; and as such, had authority to control the amount of attention I gave Tessa. The answer was not to physically overpower Kieran when he acted aggressively. Instead, I needed to change the pack dynamic so that both dogs saw me as a competent pack leader. That would remove Kieran’s instinctive desire to take over – enabling him to understand that he could not control my actions. He could no longer ignore my commands. It was no longer his responsibility to use aggressive behavior to protect us from unfamiliar dogs and frightening situations. It was my job to ensure that our pack was safe. In 2009, I had the opportunity to become the current Bark Busters trainer in the South Bay.
